im from the UK and i want to study at university in the USA when i am done with 6th form.
i start 6th form on tuesday of next week.
so i have 2 years to save up and really think about what i want to study etc… but do USA universitys run the same as British one’s. As England has Grants that the government provides for them so they are able to afford university, but then the student eventually has to pay it back when they have a secure job. does America do this?
i know i would have to pay for accomadation,
general living,
fuel for a car, clothing
etc….

i am 16 now and finish 6th form when i am 18.
should i take a gap year afterwards, in a full time job, saving for university in the US. Then go to University when i am 20?
i want to move to America anyway
but 20 seems a little old to go to Uni!!!

American universities are not subsidized by the government like UK universities are. This means that university education is VERY expensive over here.

There are grants and loans available to US citizens and permanent residents, but you will not be eligible for these. There may be some schools that offer scholarships to exceptional (and I mean the BEST of the best) international students but these are few and far between.

Uni in the US is not a possibility for many middle-income families. Tuition alone will be at least $25,000 per year (~£16,000) and you need to add several thousand more on top of that for room, board, plane tickets and entertainment.

I would suggest looking into uni’s in the UK that offer exchange programs to the US for a semester or year as this will be much more affordable. Your government (or taxes rather) provide you with incredibly affordable education… why wouldn’t you take advantage of that?

Also, completing a degree in the US will not guarantee you will be able to stay in the US to work permanently after graduation. In fact, only 8% of international students are able to stay in the US after they complete their degree. We are very strict w immigration
